Chapter Nineteen

“And so Brigalow and Sammy are both at the hospital. Alan is at the station being questioned by Meredith. Patsy, Tipper, your grandmother and I are on the way home with some rather nice supper. We won’t come in when we collect my car, we don’t want to disturb Lily. It will be interesting to see what happens next and whether Brigalow survives, and if he does, whether he has brain damage.”

“Blimey, it all happens when I’m not there. Quick thinking, Gran. Congratulations on getting the oil drum in without anyone needing to ask questions.”

“Thank you, darling. But it was sheer luck that they left us alone with him for a few minutes. The man could barely breathe let alone talk, and they just accepted it. If he doesn’t make it, we’re going to be relying on you getting through again. Perhaps you should have another go tonight.”

“I’m already on it, I have the urge to nap and type at the same time. Very frustrating when you’re trying to settle a toddler. Just got to settle Ryan now, but he’s talking about watching some war movie, I’ll have a perfect excuse to keep out the way. I’ll call you in the morning.”

“I heard most of that.” Ryan handed Angie a glass of wine. “I don’t need settling, I’m quite capable. I take it I’m watching the film on my own.”

“You always were, darling.” Angie kissed him. “Goodnight, in case I don’t see you later.”

Angie went to the kitchen and lifting Jason’s backpack, removed his notebook and the globe, which she’d wrapped in the brightly coloured hand knitted square to protect it. As she set the globe on the table, the hand holding the knitted square became hot, and she closed her eyes in concentration. She remained like that for ten minutes or so. When she opened them, she flipped open the lid of her laptop.
